North Sydney Oval is set to introduce reusable cups as part of a 12-month agreement to reduce single-use plastic waste at the venue. The program, delivered in partnership with WOSUP (War On Single Use Plastic), will replace plastic cups used to serve draught beer, wine and spirits at the venue with reusable cups that can be collected, cleaned and reused throughout the season. The initiative is expected to divert over 24,000 single-use plastic cups from landfill over 12 months. The Oval currently uses an estimated 800 plastic cups per game across approximately 30 games each year. The initiative will test whether reusable cups can reduce waste while providing patrons with a more durable and premium drinking experience. Mayor Zoë Baker said this program reflects Council’s commitment to reducing waste and exploring practical ways to use resources more efficiently.
“We know that large events can generate significant amounts of waste and initiatives like this help us explore practical solutions that reduce our environmental impact.” Mayor Baker commented “North Sydney Oval is an important community venue, and this initiative gives patrons an opportunity to be part of a simple change that could make a meaningful difference over time.”
Under the program, patrons purchasing draught beer will receive their drink in a WOSUP cup. Once finished, cups can be returned to collection points around the venue where they will be recovered, cleaned and prepared for reuse.

The agreement supports Council’s broader sustainability goals, including reducing waste and conserving natural resources. It also aligns with the NSW Government’s focus on expanding reuse systems as outlined in the NSW Plastics Plan 2.0, which includes trials of reusable cup systems at government premises and public venues. Council will work with WOSUP and venue operators to monitor participation and cup return rates throughout the trial. Progress updates and results will be shared during the year. Patrons are encouraged to support the initiative by returning their cups after use and helping North Sydney Oval reduce single-use plastic waste.
