Cost of living pressures are taking a toll on Australians’ diets, with more than 1 in 3 (35%) Australians surveyed buying less meat or protein, new research from global nutrition and food tracking app MyFitnessPal reveals. The survey of 1,011 Australians revealed that even among those confident in their protein intake, around 3 in 4 (75%) estimate they consume 50g or less per day. Fibre intake also remains a challenge, with only 33% of Australians surveyed estimate that they are meeting the recommended daily intake (25-30g) per day, despite nearly half (46%) planning to increase their fibre intake this year to improve their gut health. According to nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, Michaela Sparrow, cost of living pressures are reshaping how Australians approach nutrition.
“Cost of living pressures may influence food choices, particularly when it comes to nutrients like protein that are often perceived as more expensive.Protein and fibre are essential for overall health, supporting everything from muscle maintenance and energy levels to digestion and gut health. When these nutrients are lacking, it can impact how we feel day to day.” Sparrow commented “The key is finding practical, sustainable ways to incorporate these nutrients without adding financial strain. This can include choosing more affordable protein sources, incorporating high-fibre whole foods, and planning meals ahead.”
For Australians looking to better understand their intake, Michaela recommends using nutrition tracking as a practical tool to build awareness and identify gaps.
“Many Australians think they’re getting enough protein, but tracking your meals with tools like MyFitnessPal can help reveal gaps and guide simple, practical changes to better support your health,” Sparrow added.
