Hoyts Mother’s Day weekend Record

HOYTS has achieved its biggest Mother’s Day weekend on record, driven by the continued strong performances of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael. The result was further boosted by a record-breaking opening for Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour, alongside solid debuts from Mortal Kombat II and The Sheep Detectives, driving significant admissions growth and strong year-on-year gains. Over the Mother’s Day weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 retained the number one position for a second consecutive week, with its Australian box office total reaching $25.42M and admissions surpassing 1.1 million, driven by exceptional word of mouth. At number two, Michael continued its strong run, lifting its total to $26.62M. In the US, the film has now overtaken Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time. HOYTS Group CEO and President Damian Keogh said the company was delighted with the continued momentum at the box office, with current results pacing May to become the biggest month on record for 2026.

“HOYTS has once again finished the weekend in the number one position, delivering an outstanding market share result,” Keogh commented “Across Australia and New Zealand, HOYTS achieved its highest-ever Mother’s Day market share and ranked as the number one cinema circuit for admissions. Five HOYTS locations ranked among the top 10 cinemas nationally over the Mother’s Day weekend, including HOYTS Melbourne Central and HOYTS Karrinyup, where our newly launched HOYTS APEX auditoriums delivered exceptional admissions results.”

Alongside the standout first and second place results over the Mother’s Day weekend, Mortal Kombat II debuted in third with $2.17M, while the new Hugh Jackman release The Sheep Detectives landed in fourth with $1.54M and quickly became a family favourite. Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour rounded out the top five with $1.03M, achieving the fifth-biggest documentary opening on record. With other recent popular releases such as Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continuing to perform strongly in the Australian top 10, and the highly anticipated Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu set to hit cinemas next week, May is off to a strong start with no signs of slowing down.
