Editor’s Note: Even with a couple of days left until January 1. Isn’t  a little to early for the Hot Cross Buns to be hitting the supermarkets in Australia?

Australia’s love affair for the humble hot cross bun heats up early at Coles, with the supermarket’s award-winning range of hot cross buns available now in stores nationwide. The early arrival is helping to feed the growing appetite of Australians expected to consume around 2.5 million hot cross buns from Coles in the five days leading up to January 1. Joining the line-up of Coles’ popular traditional and award-winning chocolate hot cross buns arriving today is an indulgent NEW Coles Finest Fruity Brioche Hot Cross Buns – packed with more fruit as well as the iconic Coles VEGEMITE Hot Cross Bun.

Coles Executive General Manager of Fresh, Andy Mossop, said following the success of the VEGEMITE bun launch customers would be excited for a new luxury twist on the traditional Hot Cross Bun flavour.
“Customers love our delicious hot cross buns and the early sales in December tell us that there is strong demand to try the limited-edition flavours before the traditional Easter period,” Mossop commented “The savoury VEGEMITE mash-up is a favourite but for something a little sweeter, the new brioche dough base of our limited-edition Fruity Brioche Hot Cross Buns gives a more premium feel to the classic taste our customers know and love.”
Mossop explained that last December 2021, Coles saw a 25% increase in demand for hot cross buns compared to December 2020, proving Australia’s devotion to the delicious Easter treat.Mossop also pointed out that according to Coles’ sales data, the states with the biggest appetite for hot cross buns in December last year were; Victoria in top place – consuming the equivalent of two semi-trailers – followed by Queensland, News South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. Top suburbs across the country are; Taylors Hill, Victoria; Batemans Bay, NSW; Mount Barker, SA; Bay Central, Queensland; Belmont, WA and Glenorchy, Tasmania.
VEGEMITE Marketing Manager (Bega Foods) Jessica Hoare said VEGEMITE fans and hot cross bun connoisseurs will be excited to see the ‘mitey’ buns return to Coles.
“The response from customers to the VEGEMITE Hot Cross Buns has been incredible, and we’re thrilled to be joining forces with Coles to bring even more buns to Happy Little VEGEMITEs across the country.”
