European mercenaries searching for black powder become embroiled in the defense of the Great Wall of China against a horde of monstrous creatures.

For those of you who might be interested this is said to be the most expensive Chinese film ever made. Judging by how beautiful that this movie looked that any of the smaller studios might not have been able to pull this one off. Director Yimou Zhang was clearly capable of bringing across the epicness that you would expect from an Adventure/Fantasy movie as he was involved with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Despite its looks The Great Wall comes off as being a by the numbers action movie. The ending might come across as being clichéd though I was glad to see that the filmmakers did not completely embrace the cliché right up until the credits rolled. I was actually kind of impressed with the action sequences particularly the aerial work of the ‘Crane Corps’.
