An unlikely World War II platoon is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners.

The Monuments Men raises an interesting question ‘is a piece of art worth a human life?’
Before sitting down to write this I was going to say that I was not sure, I suppose mainly because I doubt that I will ever in such position to make such a decision. But if a painting, a novel, a piece of music, a movie and if you believe one of Jeff Foxworthy’s Redneck Jokes all have the ability to inspire you or change your life forever, then I would have to say maybe.

For the record the movie was adapted from the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History written by Robert M Edsel and Brett Witter.
This is the fifth movie that Clooney has directed, other critics have said that this is a lesser movie especially when you compare it to his 2005 movie Good Night, and Good Luck. Personally I think that’s uncalled for especially considering that George has directed various different genres and The Monuments Men is nothing like any of the movies that he has directed. I found the first couple of minutes of the movie kind of jarring and I found that it forced me to care a little bit more than I might have about the fate of the artworks especially after the signing of the Nero Decree.
The Monuments Men follows in a grand tradition of war movies with an ensemble cast, we all know how biased I am towards Australian actors but I kind of liked Matt Damon’s performance, especially his character’s ability to speak French.
