Australia Post has recently released a stamp issue featuring news headline events from the 20th century. The stamps feature “news headlines” announcing the end of World War II in 1945; the Moon landing in 1969; Cyclone Tracy in 1974 and our America’s Cup win in 1983.
“These events all made news around the world, especially here in Australia where they have figured significantly in the memories of many Australians. We hope these stamps trigger interest with the public and collectors alike.” Australia Post Philatelic Manager Michael Zsolt said.
Mr. Zsolt explained that the stamp release shows images of The “Dancing Man”, the name given to the man who was filmed dancing on the street in Sydney, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made news around the world when they became the first men to set foot on the Moon and the “news headlines” from the day Darwin was devastated by the tropical Cyclone Tracy on Christmas morning and when Australia broke the 132 year winning streak of the New York Yacht Club when we won the America’s Cup with Australia II.
