The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Director Peter Jackson
Starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage
Rating M
Score 5/6

A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on a “unexpected journey” to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim a their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.

The Hobbit would have easily got a score higher than 5 if Director Peter Jackson had not decided to split the film into three separate movies.
I totally understand that the reason behind making this decision was the pursuit of higher box office returns. However, Studios and filmmakers need to realise how annoying behaviour like this really is. The “staggered release” of the story amounts to an act of film crime. However, for the record, the “staggered release” of a story (which when we get down to it will be a well-used release tactic for certain blockbusters) is not as a heinous act of film crime when compared to the entire Filmography of The Asylum.
The Hobbit is everything that you would expect from Peter Jackson, especially those gorgeous sweeping camera shots, I was also very impressed with the running battle the Company had with the Goblins.
It was good to see that Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, Elijah Wood, Ian Holm and Andy Serkis reprise their roles from the Lord of the rings franchise.

I suppose the next big question is that after the other two movies have been released will Peter Jackson sign on for any other J. R. R. Tolkien inspired work?
