First ever AFL Premiership coin

The Australian Mint will honour 2012 AFL Premiership winning team with the release of a Premiership coin.
“This is the first winning Premiership or Championship Team to have their name appear on a coin, in any sport, in any country, anywhere around the world,” CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, Ross MacDiarmid commented. The release will include three types of limited edition coins:

  • $1 base metal coin featuring Premiership Cup. Only 15,000 available via Australia Post as a coin and cover product.
  • $1 base metal coin featuring 2012 AFL Premiership winning team name and Premiership Cup. Only 15,000 available from the winning club.
  • $1 one ounce silver proof coin with 2012 AFL Premiership winning team and Premiership Cup, along with replica premiership medallion and premiership cup in mahogany box. 5,000 available from selected retail outlets including the Royal Australian Mint.

The $1 Premiership Cup coin was presented to the presidents of the two Grand Final teams for the toss to determine the home and away teams AFL CEO, Andrew Demetriou and the CEO of the Royal Australian Mint, Ross MacDiarmid. The coin will also be used at the official coin toss before the bounce.
“Coins have been part of civilised culture for a long time and it’s really exciting to think that in 50 years not only AFL Fans, but coin collectors will be trying to find the first ever coin minted with the winners of the 2012 AFL Grand Final,” said Mr Demetriou.
