News from the HOYTS weekend box office starting Friday, July 31. A new superhero swung into the top spot at HOYTS and the Australian box office this weekend as Spider-Man: Brand New Day recorded the biggest opening of a Spider-Man film ever, driving in a colossal $30.4M. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey took out number two, generating another $6.18M, bringing the total box office to $39.7M. It seems the toys are keeping the kids entertained as Toy Story 5 held its spot in number three, bringing the total to $45M. Moana is still sailing strong as it moves into number four this week, bringing in an additional $570k over the weekend. Rounding out the top five was Minions and Monsters, taking the movie’s box office total to $22.9M.

This past weekend was the biggest box office ever recorded on a Saturday and a Sunday, respectively, marking the biggest opening weekend of 2026. The top 10 movies collectively accounted for 99% of the weekend’s total national gross box office.  The top genre of the weekend was action with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which delivered the biggest opening weekend for a Thursday release and the second biggest opening weekend of all time in Australia.

8. French title, Colours of Time, took the #8 spot this weekend, earning $70.3K. The movie’s box office total is now $563K.
9. Portuguese title, The Blue Trail generated $35.8K on its opening weekend, the movie now has a total $219K at the box office.
10. Rounding out the top 10, Tamil title, Jana Nayagan, took home $26.6K this weekend. The film now has a cumulative box office of $764K.
