In the mid-27th century, the Terran Confederation is at war with the felinoid Kilrathi Empire. After destroying a Terran base, the Kilrathi have seized a NAVCOM unit with the hyperspace jump coordinates to Earth.

With Terran reinforcements scheduled to arrive two hours after the Kilrathi hit Earth, it falls upon the starfighter carrier TCS Tiger Claw to keep the Kilrathi busy.

I don’t remember if Wing Commander got a theatrical release in Australia back in 1999 but I do vaguely remember its release on video. If you read up about the release of the movie apparently being based on a video game series the film diverged significantly from the established Wing Commander universe, and was a critical and commercial failure. It’s also interesting to that Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard have starred together in 5 movies Wing Commander (1999), Summer Catch (2001), Scooby-Doo (2002), Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), and She’s All That (1999), where Lillard had a cameo role. Though I haven’t read the movie novelisation, from what I know about the plot of the novel, I’m certain that the novel is better than the movie.

Wing Commander is cheesy in the way that war movies can be and it definitely has a couple of rewatchable action moments. I loved the ship designs though back when I watched this when it was originally released I’m certain that I didn’t pick up on the religious persecution faced by Christopher “Maverick” Blair, I think a younger me might’ve needed things to be a little more obvious. I found that I enjoyed Tchéky Karyo’s performance as “Paladin” . I also found that I enjoyed Ginny Holder as Rosie. The movie definitely needed more screen time for the Kilrathi.
