After years of anticipation, festival buzz and a growing cult following, Australian indie game Pro Jank Footy will officially launch on 13 August in Australia and New Zealand (12 August in North America), bringing its wildly unpredictable take on Australian Rules football to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. To mark the announcement, the team has released an all-new launch trailer, created exclusively for the occasion by acclaimed Australian animator and filmmaker Michael Cusack (YOLO: Crystal Fantasy, Koala Man, Smiling Friends and the forthcoming Netflix animated series Dad’s House), whose unmistakably surreal style is a perfect match for the game’s gloriously chaotic take on Australia’s national pastime.
Pro Jank Footy brings together an impressive line-up of Australian creative talent. At its helm is David Ashby, co-creator of cult comedy series Danger 5 and Dad’s House, working alongside co-creator and lead developer Tyler Roach, producer Cameron Rogers, and Aunty Donna’s Broden Kelly, whose unmistakable commentary gives the game its distinctly Australian personality. Developed by Adelaide studios Powerbomb Games and Tinker Town, with assistance from Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation, and published by Umbrella Gaming, Pro Jank Footy takes inspiration from arcade classics like NBA Jam and NHL ’94, replacing realism with outrageous momentum swings, impossible power-ups and the kind of suburban absurdity that could only come from Australian Rules football. A throwback to the golden age of arcade sports games, Pro Jank Footy is designed for solo play, couch multiplayer and online competition, combining fast-paced gameplay with fictional suburban clubs (such as South Coast Prawns, North Problem, Salisbury Park Snags, and Stone Valley Pinks), original team songs composed by Danger 5 co-creator Dario Russo, and endless combinations of outrageous power-ups that ensure no two matches ever play out the same way. Every goal scored gives the opposing team the chance to unleash one of more than 150 game-changing power-ups. Players can shrink the opposition, summon a superstar teammate, turn themselves into a car, transform everyone into seagulls, add goalposts around the entire boundary, introduce a third team mid-match, or stack increasingly ridiculous rule changes until every game descends into beautiful chaos.
“Pro Jank Footy is a love letter to Aussie Rules Footy and our absurd culture.” producer David Ashby commented “Our game hopes to deliver an authentic arcade footy experience fans have hoped for, and an accessible entry point for anyone new to the sport, or for those who have no interest in sport whatsoever. It’s a party game made by a very small and talented team out of Adelaide. There’s not a lot to do here except for working for the government, playing professional sport or making strange things. Somehow, with Pro Jank Footy, we’ve managed to do all three.“
“Pro Jank Footy is the birth of a new era in gaming. Join us or die.” Broden Kelly added.
Already generating international attention, Pro Jank Footy has been officially selected to appear at Day of the Devs (San Francisco), BitSummit (Kyoto) and Playtopia (Cape Town), introducing Australian Rules football to audiences around the world through its uniquely irreverent take on the game. Closer to home, playable arcade cabinets installed in Melbourne pubs have helped build a devoted local following ahead of launch. Pro Jank Footy will launch globally at 9am AEST August 13, 2026 on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 1|2. The game supports English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Japanese, traditional and simplified chinese language text.
