A small US Army unit must rescue French political prisoners from a castle. Despite mutual disdain between rescuers and elite prisoners, they’re forced to unite against surrounding SS troops.
As with most movies I’ve watched from The Asylum, I kind of stumbled across this while looking for something to watch on Tubi. As streaming services go, Tubi is something of a mixed bag, but one of the good things about the service is that it offers a free subscription with ads. Those of you who might have been reading my reviews for a while are probably aware of my love-hate relationship with Asylum movies. I was actually kind of shocked that the Battle for Castle Itter was actually kind of good and actually watchable. It’s nowhere near the calibre of something like Saving Private Ryan but at least it didn’t have any of the low-quality computer effects that I would associate with their creature features. No, it should be noted that the movie is loosely based on the actual Battle for Castle Itter, and the people who leave movie cinemas listing all the way that a given movie wasn’t historically accurate are probably going to hate this one. There is at least one way, based on the little I know about the actual battle, where the filmmakers diverted from historical facts, and I understand why they did it even though it was tropey in a cheesy sort of way. I actually enjoyed the performances of Frano Lasić and Laurent Rouy as Prime Minister Paul Reynaud & Prime Minister Edouard Daladier.
