After thirty-five years abroad, Donal returns to his native Scotland to make amends with his estranged brother Sandy.
For those of you who might be interested, Glenrothan is Brian Cox’s first feature film as a Director. It should also be noted that Bria Cox had previously worked with writer David Ashton on the British radio crime drama series McLevy. Reading about Glenrothan was described as a love letter to Scotland. After watching the movie, I can see why. Glenrothan is the type of movie where it wasn’t difficult to deliver stunning scenery to the screen. Brian Cox and Alan Cumming were a great combination of grouchy and charming. I loved Cumming’s performance of the song One Meatball. I was a little surprised to see Shirley Henderson (some people might remember her as Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). I loved Alexandra Wilkie’s performance as Sasha. At the time, Wilkie was in her debut film role. It was good to see that Glenrothan didn’t fall into the trap of so many other comedies that have an awkward sense of humor. My biggest complaint was that the movie fell into the cliche of the American looking to make money in the old country. Still, the filmmakers thankfully didn’t go full tilt on the cliché and delivered what could be considered a lighter interpretation of it.
