A Hungarian child music prodigy survives the Holocaust, finds peace in Australia and for more than 50 years makes an extraordinary contribution to its culture.
I know I know another music documentary, this isn’t the start of some kind of trend. Previously I’ve said that A sign of how good a documentary about music or a band is if you find yourself listening to the music after you’ve finished watching the documentary given the extent of Tommy Tycho’s contribution to Australian culture there’s a chance that there will be a few people looking back throughout Australian Television history.
I wasn’t entirely sure what I was expecting from the documentary, but that is only to be expected considering up until this point I’ve probably heard Tommy Tycho’s work without actually knowing who he actually was. It was interesting hearing about Tycho’s life in Hungary during World War 2. It was an interesting touch by director Stephan Wellink with the use of sketches and ticker tape explaining historical moments during the war. Hearing about his time in Iran as the personal pianist for the Shah of Iran. Will Dower made an interesting point about the relationship between Drummers and orchestras. Henry Mancini’s advice about orchestras was very interesting. It was very interesting hearing John Foreman talk about Tommy Tycho’s arrangement of the Australian national anthem Advance Australia Fair and the 1986 Australia Day broadcast, featuring Julie Anthony as the soloist.Of all the people who were interviewed for this documentary I was a little surprised to see Yahoo Serious pop up in this. It was interesting hearing about Serious’ efforts to get Tycho involved with the film score of Young Einstein. Sitting here writing this I just found that Tycho was involved with the film score for Serious’ 1993 film Reckless Kelly. I’ve mentioned it before in other reviews but I love it when filmmakers get creative with their credits beyond the simple white text on a black background.
