The Power of Choice exhibition 2–25 June

A powerful photographic exhibition documenting Australians who have chosen voluntary assisted dying will be shown at NSW Parliament House from 2–25 June 2026. The Power of Choice, by acclaimed portrait photographer Julian Kingma, is presented by Go Gentle Australia and offers an intimate look at the people behind Australia’s voluntary assisted dying laws. Kingma is one of our most accomplished portrait photographers, with work regularly exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and many portraits held in its permanent collection. Over 18 months, Kingma travelled the country to document something no one had attempted before: the people who choose voluntary assisted dying, and the families and health professionals who support them on their final journey. Through deeply personal portraits and photo essays, the free exhibition – which is based on the Walkley Award-winning book by the same name – captures stories of hope, struggle, courage and acceptance. The images reveal the human face of these compassionate laws and invite visitors to consider what makes a good death. Go Gentle’s CEO Dr Linda Swan said the NSW Parliament was a fitting place to host the exhibition.

“This year marks Go Gentle Australia’s 10th anniversary, and four years since voluntary assisted dying legislation passed in NSW.” Dr Swan commented “The law was the culmination of a 30-year campaign for end-of-life rights, and it is apt that Parliament can highlight the incredible benefits this reform brings to terminally ill people.”

Founded in 2016 by broadcaster Andrew Denton, Go Gentle is a national charity promoting and enabling choice at the end of life, including the option of voluntary assisted dying.
