MMA legend Patton James, now a commercial fisherman, is pulled back into the cage when his brother is in danger. Reuniting with his old coach Sammy, he commits to one final fight in ONE Championship against its brutal champion Xavier Grau.

I went into this familiar with Daniel Macpherson’s television work and perhaps not that familiar with his movie roles, this isn’t I’d readily associate him. MacPherson gave a solid performance. The success of a movie like this is down to the ability of the actor playing the villain (Bren Foster) to make you hate their character. Now, I might have not hated Xavier Grau with the fire of a thousand suns but I was very satisfied with how the movie ended. I was a little surprised to find out that Russell Crowe has a new musical act indoor Garden Party (apparently the third act he’s been involved with) when I heard Crowe singing during the end credits. It should also be noted that Australian singer Amy Shark made her feature film debut. I was also completely unfamiliar with Tyler Atkins’ work as a director. I loved what the filmmakers did with the opening sequence, they let the audience connect some of the dots themselves (my first thought was that some sort of injury was involved), only to reveal what actually happened later in the movie. I know it might be an unfair thing to say about “combat” sports movies but because of the cultural impact of the Rocky Franchise Beast ran the risk of being considered a Rocky knockoff. With the unsanctioned fight Beast did have a similar point to Rocky IV, but Beast dealt with it better. Russell Crowe gave a good performance. Now I’ll admit that I might be seeing something that wasn’t there but with the grumpiness Crowe brought to the role of Sammy I heard shades of Bill Hunter in his voice. I loved to  see Matt Nable pop up in this. After watching Beast I’m pretty sure I might have to watch a few movies featuring Luke Hemsworth.
