Robin Hood: Men in Tights

Director Mell Brooks                Starring Cary Elwes, Richard Lewis, Roger Rees                 Rated PG
Score 5/6

The legend that had it coming, Robin Hood: Men In Tights wipes away the mystery – and the dignity! – England’s most infamous stocking-filler. A spoof of Robin Hood in general, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) in particular.

A parody movie, it’s been more than a few years since I last watched one. Though I suppose it could be argued that there’s a few recently released blockbusters that are secretly parodies of their genre. Men in Tights is so incredibly silly and yet in the same breath its genius, it’s the kind of movie that you could find something new to laugh at every time you watch it just like most of Leslie Nielsen’s parody movies.                    For those of you interested this was Dave Chappelle’s first credited role as Ahchoo, Chappelle was great in his role but the jokes about his character’s name is a prime example of how silly some of the jokes can get. I loved how self aware the movie was. The opening credits sequence was something that I haven’t seen imitated.
I loved Mark Blankfield’s performance as Blinkin. I especially loved him in the Men in Tights dance number. Now I know I’m mistaken by this but every time the love theme Marion was featured in the movie I kept getting the feeling that I’ve heard the song or something vaguely similar but I couldn’t figure out where I had heard it before.
Alan Rickman clearly gave the best portrayal of The Sheriff of Nottingham but I have to wonder who gave the best portrayal of Robin Hood (was it Cary Elwes because he can speak with an English accent?) Who gave the best portrayal of Prince John?
