Joined by an eager recruit to protect the King of France, three loyal swordsmen attempt to defeat an evil royal advisor and a seductive envoy plotting to overthrow the crown.

Of the many adaptations of The Three Musketeers I’ve always been a fan of Stephen Herek’s 1993 adaptation because I always thought that it had the right balance of action and comedy. While the performances of  Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, Rebecca De Mornay as Milady and Michael Wincott Rochefort set the benchmark for their respective characters. I also have a soft spot for the action sequences of Paul W.S Anderson’s 2011 adaption. Bill Thomas’ recent adaptation didn’t even come close to being able to touch either, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that Thomas owes the people of France some sort of formal apology because at best this adaption was an uninspired mess made a filmmaker who didn’t seem to know what he was doing, though judging by the opening credits it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that there were plans at some point to turn this into a TV series. I’d also be surprised if the stunt coordinator had any experience with swords. Nobody cast in this movie gave a decent performance and I hope that they don’t crop up in any movies that I watch for the next little while. It was interesting to cast Malachi Pullar-Latchman a black actor, as D’Artagnan, looking at his filmography it should be noted that he has not been cast in any other Action Adventure roles like The Three Musketeers. The casting choice was a very 2020’s thing to do and I would like to think that Pullar-Latchman was the best man available for the job and not to fulfill a quota or make a political statement. I get how frustrating things like that can be for some people. But the way it should always be especially in these (sometimes frustrating) times is the best person for the job. Period.
