In 1932, a modernizing U.S. Army orders the Cavalry to destroy its horses but some  sympathetic cavalrymen, defying orders, steal the horses in order to save them from destruction, to the dismay of the top Army-brass.

The movie is not actually based on a true story. It was based on a story that was told by cowboys to writer Dennis Lynton Clark. The cowboys were working on his father’s ranch in Montana during the 1940s. The surplus cavalry horses were turned over to the Dept. of Agriculture and sold. They were never destroyed as in this film. I vaguely remember watching this movie before but it’s been more than a few years since I last watched it and I kind of stumbled across this one.
I suppose the main reasonI watched this movie was because it starred Don Johnson. I can’t say that I have really watched much of Johnson’s work (I may have watched more of his movie roles that I’ve realized), I’m just a fan of Nash Bridges and I’m starting to appreciate his early work on Miami Vice.It also didn’t hurt that Gabrielle Anwar was cast in this as Jessica Stuart. I loved the moments her character had with Rod Steiger as Col. Owen Stuart.I also thought that Bob Gunton was brilliantly despicable as Col. John Hardesty. My biggest problem with In Pursuit of Honor was that the filmmakers really didn’t get the chance for too many hero shots of the countryside they were filming in though to be fair this was a made-for-cable movie shot in Australia. That being said Olin was capable of getting me emotinally invested in the movie, something that I have found lacking in other directors of more recent movies with larger budgets.
