The vikings come to Gaul and kidnap the chief’s nephew. The chief sends Asterix and Obelix up north to get him back but the nephew has fallen in love with the viking chief’s daughter.

For those of you who might be interested, ‘The Adventures of Asterix’ first appeared in the Franco-Belgian comic magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. The movie is based on the book “Asterix and the Normans” (published in 1966) however it extends the plot and uses elements from some other books, notably “Asterix and the Great Crossing” (published in 1975). It should also be noted thatThis is the only Asterix film not counting the US dub of Asterix and the Big Fight to have been dubbed using a United States based voice cast rather than a British voice cast.

I’m pretty sure that this is the second animated Asterix movie that I have reviewed, all the other Asterix movies I have watched have been live-action movies and I might have to watch a few more Animated movies before figuring out if i prefer the animated over the live-action movies. It was nice to watch an Asterix adventure dubbed into english I thought that Brad Garrett was a great casting choice as Obelix while Paul Giamatti seemed like an odd casting choice for Asterix and I was surprised when I finally figured out that Evan Rachel Wood was cast as Abba the viking chief’s daughter and Sean Astin was cast as Justforkix. Okay, towards the end of the movie there were a couple of cliched moments for the sake of the plot, the kind of moments that you expect from a family movie. But overall the movie is good fun to watch. The kind of fun that all of the family can enjoy and the movie even hits on a couple of nostalgic jokes that fans of the books will appreciate most notably dealing with Red Beard and his pirate crew.
