A courageous young World War II gunner and aspiring cartoonist, trapped in the belly gun of a B-17 aircraft with the landing gear destroyed, has only his imagination as a force that might be able to save him.

Amazing Stories is an American anthology television series created by Steven Spielberg, that originally ran on NBC in the United States from September 29, 1985 to April 10, 1987. It should be noted that ‘The Mission’ ran longer than other episodes of Amazing Stories and originally aired November 3rd 1985.
Is there a scene from a movie or television show that you watched when you where a kid that just stuck with you? For me there is a few but specifically related was the image of a B-17 bomber once it had finally landed.
Now, yes, most of the special effects have aged, some might say badly. But that is to be expected when you’re looking at a television series whose last episode was 34 years ago. So why even bother with this episode of Amazing Stories? Well, it is an entry on the ‘I’m not crying, your crying’ list. I loved Kevin Costner’s, Casey Siemaszko’s & Kiefer Sutherland’s performances. In the final act Sutherland had me tensing up and muttering ‘no … no … no’ while Siemaszko’s defiance had me in tears. For those of you interested Sutherland was 19 in The Mission and it was released before his roles in iconic movies Stand by Me and The Lost Boys. Reading the cast credits for this episode I was also surprised to learn that this was one of Australian actor Anthony LaPaglia’s first credited roles as Mechanic #2.
