Occupation: Rainfall

rainfallDirector Luke Sparke
Starring Dan Ewing, Temuera Morrison, Daniel Gillies & Jet Tranter
Rated M
Score 5/6

Two years after aliens land on Earth, survivors from Sydney, Australia, fight in a desperate war as the number of casualties continue to grow.

Okay, perhaps I should have done my homework and rewatched Occupation (Rainfall’s prequel which was released in 2018 and was also directed by Luke Sparke) before sitting down to watch this. For those of you keeping score yes this probably the first Science Fiction movie that I have watched for a couple of months. I’m vaguely familiar Sparke’s work as a director having previously reviewed his movie Red Billabong. I have also seen the 2018 prequel, It was good to see that stars Dan Ewing and Temuera Morrison returned for the sequel. Daniel Gillies gave a brilliant performance as Wing Commander Hayes, I also enjoyed Jet Tranter’s performance as Amelia Chambers. Tanter and Gillies where brilliant when they had scenes together. Ken Jeong certainly was an interesting casting choice, and I was really surprised to find out that Jason Isaacs was the voice actor for Steve the Alien.
I really felt that I should have got my act together and tried to get my act together and watched this one at a cinema instead of waiting for it to be released to a video on demand service because there are some amazing action sequences in the first act that would have looked spectacular on a cinema screen. I loved the visual feel of Rainfall, the filmmakers clearly used the same approach to the scenery that was used by the 2008 television series Sanctuary. The alien fighters reminded of the fighters from the ones used in the 1996 classic Independence Day. Though come to think of it, alien fighters like that, seem to be the go to choice for most science fiction movies. One of the things that I really like about science fiction movies are the movies that ask questions. Like are we alone in the universe? and what does it mean to be human?
Now of course going by the ending the question needs to be asked when is the next movie going to be released?
