Ice is featured in the Russian Film Festival

I went into watching Ice knowing very little about Russian cinema, I am fairly certain that I can probably count the number of Russian movies that I have watched on both hands and for the record I watched the trailer for Ice twice. While watching the trailer I was immediately reminded of a line of dialogue from Ice Castles ‘Well, I could fall on my butt, hit my head, and go deaf.’ (it was the 2010 remake that came to mind I can’t say with absolute certainty that I have watched the 1978 original) as I watched the movie I was reminded of the 1992 movie The Cutting Edge starring D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly.

The festival suggests that Ice is a ‘Chick Flick’ personally I would recommend this as more of a ‘date movie’. How do I see the difference between a ‘Chick Flick’ and a ‘date movie’? with a ‘date movie’ any men forced to be in the audience are less likely to be planning some sort of petty revenge.

I was a little surprised to find out that Ice was a musical, I particularly enjoyed the opening and closing numbers. Some of the scenes particularly around Irkutsk and the lake would have had a greater impact if I had watched the movie on a larger screen instead just my laptop. However, there are lots of things that built up to make Ice such a great movie experience. I loved Diana Enakaeva’s as Nadya Lapshina, as a child. I loved the positivity Alexander Petrov brought to the role of ‘Sasha’ Gorin. On a personal note I must admit that I laughed till I cried at the scene where Sasha stranded Nadya on the frozen lake. I know most people wont laugh so loudly at that scene but I do have a spinal cord injury and memories of an incident at a Turkish Restaurant when I was 14 involving my darling big sister, me being a bit of a smart ass and the quick release wheels I had on my wheelchair at the time.
