More than a Mile – Melbourne Documentary Film Festival

Director Alexander Michael

Score 6/6

‘More than a Mile’ is a documentary following the lives of a runner and his friend on their six-month journey towards the Beer Mile World Classic.

I will admit that while watching More than a Mile I had the feeling I probably should have had a beer in my hand. I knew after laughing at the trailer for More than a Mile that I had to watch this documentary. The documentary didn’t come across as being as hilarious as I thought it was going to be, so I suppose a lot of the documentary’s humour comes from the concept of the Beer Mile. Even though they where not mentioned in the documentary I would be lying if I did not think of the fabled exploits of former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke and former Australian Test Cricketer David Boon at least once.
Towards the start of More than a Mile there was a couple of moments where I got the impression from some of the camera work that this seemed that it wasn’t the most polished documentary but that could easily be dismissed as lack of experience on the part of the director because those issues disappeared over the course of the documentary.
Charlie Blanch is a highly charismatic individual and a brilliant choice as the subject for a documentary, there is part of me that would have liked if More than a Mile went for longer than its 98 minute runtime. I will admit that some documentary’s longer then 110 minutes can be a bit of a chore to watch but I would like to think that Alexander Michael I also enjoyed Nick Macfalls’ narration throughout the documentary. A point he made about running a bad track event as opposed to running a bad beer mile reminded me of the hot dog riddle from the 2003 movie Bulletproof Monk.
