The Predator

Director Shane Black
Starring Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay
Rated
Score 4/6

When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters’ return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

The Predator is to be thought as a sequel to Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010). For those of you who might not be aware director Shane Black starred in Predator as Hawkins (the one with the glasses and who read the comic on the helicopter).

It was good to see that The Predator was a sequel not another Remake, Reboot or Reimagination. There are already enough of those coming out of Hollywood and with all the reshuffling that happens with franchises it gets a little confusing at times. It was good to see that director Shane Black embraced The Predator’s action genre and that the executives did not take this movie down the PG-13 suitable for everyone route. I also liked that wasn’t a straight Sci-Fi/Action movie and that where some nice chuckles to be had on top of the meta winks to the camera. Though I am sure that there are fans of the franchise who will notice more the winks to the fans then I did.

I kind of enjoyed Oliva Munn’s performance. It was good to see that her character was half way between the screaming damsel and out right bad ass and there was some noticeable growth with her character Casey by the end of the movie. I also enjoyed Keegan-Michael Key performance I really did not expect to him cast in something like The Predator, his comedic background made him the perfect casting choice, it was also good to see Jacob Tremblay in another movie. The last movie I saw him in was The Room. I was a little surprised when to learn when the credits rolled that Thomas Jane was one of ‘The Loonies’ (the ragtag group of ex-soldiers).
