Laura Imbruglia – St Kilda Film Festival 2018 Interview

Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping

A big thank you to Laura Imbruglia director of Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping for taking the time to answer some questions.

Is Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping the first film that you’ve had at The St Kilda festival?
It sure is! Film festivals are a new and exciting world for me.

What is the VCE Education Screening at the St Kilda Film Festival? How did you get involved with it?
I have no idea – St Kilda Film Festival just told me they’d included our film in their VCE Screening as well as the Top 100 Short Films. I was happy the film made it into not one but two screening events!

I enjoyed seeing the role reversal portrayed in Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping. What was the inspiration for your film?
Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping taken from my web-series Amateur Hour. Each episode of Amateur Hour opens with a sketch which features me reenacting various awkward scenarios I have lived through. With this particular sketch, I was originally the main character and I wanted to recreate a selection of the worst encounters I (and women I know) have had from sexist dudes in guitar stores. However, when I pitched to Found Sound (the guitar store we filmed in), one of the guys that works there suggested we flip the genders and seeing as it seemed like an hilarious idea, I decided to bend my series rule and make someone else the lead character of this sketch. It was a hit!

What other films have you directed?
I directed all the opening skits for Amateur Hour season 2,
Where can people see them? You can see them at www.amateurhour.tv – they open each episode.

Apart from Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping what you looking forward to watch at the St Kilda Film Festival? SoundKILDA will be a treat. Music videos are often under appreciated for their cinematic brilliance.

Have you worked with anybody involved with the production of Gender Reversed Guitar Shopping before?
I hadn’t worked with the actors before (well I had worked with some of them in the music scene, as they’re all musicians). I had worked with Sam Orchard (DOP) and Kelly Dingeldei (boom and editor) on a lot of the Amateur Hour content over two seasons.

Do you have any future projects we should know about?
I’m considering a 3rd Season of Amateur Hour but maybe it would just focus on the comedic content, which seems to be the most popular of our content. I’m working on my fourth album this year though, so it might be a 2019/2020 aim 🙂

What is your favourite movie?
Clockwork Orange – I love Kubrick.
