Ready Player One

Score 4.5/6

It’s the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. We’re out of oil. We’ve wrecked the climate. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle. Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions – and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

A big thank you to Big Sister for recommending I read this one and yes you are right I did like the voice Ernest Cline used and I also found that the whole concept of having the OASIS, was something that I could identify with.

I know it might be a little bit shocking but with the movie adapted from the book Ready Player One set to be released in Australia on March 29th I’ve actually done my homework and finished reading the book before the movie is released.

I’ll openly admit it, I liked this book and found myself swept away by the plot and finding it difficult at times to put the book down. Now this is a piece of young adult fiction, but it was good to see that Cline did not fall into the ‘your special you can change the world’ trope that has been a contributing factor to the downfall of other young adult franchises that have been adapted into movies. I enjoyed the music and movie references throughout the book (I particularly liked the references to Back to the Future and Godzilla) though I did feel that some of the computer game references where wasted on me. Though I suppose my only complaint is that the characters where not that memorable.
