Live By Night

Director Ben Affleck
Starring Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson
Rated MA
Score 3/6

A group of Boston-bred gangsters set up shop in balmy Florida during the Prohibition era, facing off against the competition and the Ku Klux Klan.

Live by Night is based on a novel of the same name by American author Dennis Lehane that was published in 2012.

Live by Night is a decent enough movie with some stunningly beautiful shots. However, this really is not the tensest gangster movie that I have watched in recent years and this really wasn’t as glamourous a movie that you expect from a movie that was set during prohibition era America especially when the main character is a rum-runner. I have not read Lehane’s book so I can only assume that Affleck who directed and starred in the movie but also wrote the screenplay might have been restricted by constraints of the story but at the moment given the opportunity I think I would prefer to re-watch Affleck’s 2010 movie The Town then re-watch Live by Night.
I really have not seen that much of Elle Fanning’s work but her role as Loretta is possibly one of her stand roles.
