Live! – Throwback Review

Director Bill Guttentag

Score 6/6

A mockumentary following an ambitious TV network executive trying to produce a controversial reality show where contestants play Russian Roulette.

For those of you who are wondering I first reviewed Live! on the 18th of May 2010.

I am sure there is more than a few of you out there who love reality television, I am equally sure that there is just as many of you out there who hate it and wouldn’t be surprised if something like this happened. I mean there has been Running Man, the mockumentary Series 7: the contenders and the future of this kind of “Death Television” has been explored in the Doctor Who episode Bad Wolf (the twelfth episode of the revived first series). And it’s a scary thought to consider how close society is to letting a network air something like this for real.

I still enjoyed watching Live! writer/director Bill Guttentag had a brilliant concept with this and got some great performances out of both Eva Mendes & David Krumholtz. But it should be noted that Live! really isn’t a movie that stands up to a second viewing, I think it lost some of the impact that it had from when I originally watched it seven years ago, because I remembered the ending. Is this a bad thing? Perhaps not. This is the kind of movie that is going to stick with you long after you have forgotten that you have watched and then when you see its poster or it at the friendly DVD store it’s all going to come flooding back and you’re going to watch it again.
