Children’s Week 2016

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos today announced that more than 65 organisations will share more than $55,000 in grants to support events that celebrate our youngest Victorians, this Children’s week. Minister Mikakos explained that children’s Week runs from 22 to 30 October and will see thousands of Victorian children participate in events and activities organised by early childhood services, local councils, playgroups, libraries and community groups.
“Children’s Week highlights the rights of all children to be safe and healthy, to play and to enjoy their lives, to learn and to thrive.” Minister Mikakos commented “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate Victoria’s children and what they can achieve, and gives us a chance to reflect on how we can ensure every child reaches their potential.”

Minister Mikakos explained that children’s Week is a national celebration that showcases the achievements of our children and young people, and puts the spotlight on their right to learn, to be safe and to grow up happy and healthy. It is also a time for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities. The Minister went on to point out that the theme for this year’s Children’s Week – Children have the right to reliable information from the media – relates to Article 17 of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Minister Mikakos said that the media plays a central role in shaping how children learn, and making sure kids have access to accurate information is fundamental to shaping how they come to understand the world.
