After spending two decades in England, Bill Bryson returns to the U.S., where he decides the best way to connect with his homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends.

This another movie that can be put on the long list of movies of where I have not read the book because after watching the movie I kind of got the impression that reading the book was a prerequisite before watching the movie due to the almost lazy storytelling.
Even though both Redford and Nolte gave decent enough performances, and Redford had some pretty good one-liners but not enough was done to make me care about the reason why they went on their journey in the first place or for that matter make me care if they completed their trek, and that’s kind of vital for movies like this. Director Ken Kwapis seemed to over rely on the beautiful panoramic shots of the American countryside which seemed to lose their impact to a degree on the smaller screen and just maybe if a little more care and attention had been put into the screenplay this would have been a little bit more than just a ‘watchable’ movie.
