Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.

Ok before I start this review I want to take a moment to send a message to all of the thirteen year olds out there who are just starting to go to the movies by themselves, for the record this message is for a subgroup of those thirteen year olds whose IQ is generally divided by the amount of people in the group they are hanging out with. Yes I know by opening this review like this makes me come off as being some sort of crank. But this needs to be said, and as an extra special bonus to the people I am talking about I am typing this part of my review slower just for you guys. There are two rules you really should be made aware of about being in a cinema. The first rule being don’t climb over the chairs, there is a reason why chairs are set out in a rows. If you need more information about rows, I suggest that you talk to your math teacher. The second rule being there is no need to hold personal conversations once the previews have finished. This is an important rule so I’ll repeat it, there is no need to hold personal conversations once the previews have finished.

I was not overly impressed when I found out that there was two directors behind this one, I have not heard of Anthony Russo & Joe Russo before. Looking into their previous work it appears that the Russo brothers don’t seem to have a very strong background in the action genre from what I could tell the Russo brother had made their name in the comedy genre. Though I suppose when you get down to it a Marvel movie is usually about the effects over the substance, otherwise why would there be a tandem 3D release of the movie at the cinema. So this was a chance to cut their teeth in the action genre with an overwhelming amount of support.
The Winter Soldier goes on exploring Steve Rogers’ efforts in acclimatising to the modern world but the movie also makes an interesting point how providing freedom with a gun to the head of modern society, really is not freedom at all. It’s a great parallel to how governments can read our emails and keep track of us without us even knowing. I mean sure, if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about. But this looking after us for our “own good” it has to stop somewhere right? I really was not expecting this, considering that most comic book movies are usually just good mindless Friday night entertainment.
It was also good to see a familiar Australian actor get a role as well as the prerequisite cameo by Stan Lee. Also be sure to stay for the post credits sequence.
