Greens Present Anti-Cull Petition to Senate

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert has today presented the Senate with a petition containing over 88,000 signatures of people opposing Colin Barnett’s cruel shark cull.
“It is clear that there is huge opposition to the cruel Western Australian shark cull,” Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens marine spokesperson said today. “The fact that 88,160 people from around Australia and the world have signed this online petition shows how far and wide word of WA’s cull has travelled, and how it disgusts people”
Senator Siewart commented that Over the last few days we’ve seen video and photos of sharks being badly injured by the drum lines, which confirms growing evidence that many released sharks are dying as a result of the damage inflicted on them and that people are shocked by this treatment of our marine life and the disregard being shown by Colin Barnett and Tony Abbott.
“This is why the Greens have legislation before Parliament that will prevent the Minister from granting the exceptions of drum lines from the EPBC Act that have allowed WA’s shark cull to go ahead.” Senator Siewart said.
