ACT launches campaign to remove illegal firearms from Canberra’s streets

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell recently launched a new campaign aimed at removing illegal firearms from Canberra’s streets and out of the hands of criminals.
“The ACT Government is offering rewards of up to $5000 for information which results in the seizure of an illicit firearm or the successful prosecution for a firearms related crime,” Mr. Corbell said. “While the number of offences where guns are used to commit crimes has fallen in the ACT, we are aware of the issues experienced in other jurisdictions in relation to illegal gun activity, and this campaign is an opportunity to begin to address this concern in the ACT.” Corbell added.
Mr. Corbell went on to explain that the campaign follows a 34.3 per cent drop in the number of reported offences where a firearm has been used in the past five financial years. There were 46 reported offences where a firearm was used in 2012, compared to 70 of those offences in 2008.

People are urged to report any information regarding illicit firearms to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the website
