Jarhead is based on the novel written by former Marine Anthony Swofford about his pre-Desert Storm experiences in Saudi Arabia and his time fighting in Kuwait.

Swofford’s book is better then the film as it glosses over some of the events that took place in the book such as Swofford’s life before he joined the Marines, his attempted suicide and the death of his friend Troy.
All of the lead actors give it their best in this movie. Showing a side of military service that is not glamorized by Hollywood but full of Torment, boredom, brotherhood and waiting.
