An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Dark Shadows was inspired by the 1960s soap opera of the same name.

Basically the plot is about a vampire called Barnaby Collins who rejected the love of a witch and so his family was cursed and he was buried for nearly 200 years. He is resurrected in the 1970’s and attempts to restore the Collins’s family fortune. It took a long time to set up the plot background. I did love how at the beginning the 1970’s was giving a washed out look on film making you feel you were watching old footage. The feel of it also brought back memories of “Love At First Bite”. The story had some great quirky roles. Helen Bonham Carter was great as the family’s resident alcoholic psychiatrist. I thought the jokes were unoriginal and so predictable. For a good part of the movie the love interest “just call me Vicky’ isn’t even on screen. In the end, it just became another Tim Burton movie with no surprises. I can’t believe I would only give a movie starring Johnny Depp (but then again all Tim Burton’s movies seem to star Johnny Depp)
