Yalukut Weelam Ngargee free indigenous arts and music festival is returning in 2018 on Saturday 3 February, with a deadly line up of indigenous music and arts including Baker Boy, Emily Wurramara and Benny Walker.
City of Port Phillip Mayor, Cr Bernadene Voss is pleased the Council is presenting Yalukut Weelam Ngargee in its 13th year and looking forward to the growing arts festival showcasing Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander talent.
“Yalukut Weelam Ngargee celebrates and recognises the Indigenous culture within the City of Port Phillip and wider Melbourne. We are proud to be showcasing traditional Indigenous activities and workshops at the 2018 event for locals and visitors alike to participate in, and invite the community to take part in the celebration.” Cr Voss commented.
The Festival is pleased to welcome Northern Territory-raised, Melbourne-based hip hop artist, Baker Boy to the stage in 2018. Known in Arnhem Land as the ‘fresh prince’, Baker Boy is related to renowned Indigenous artists and 2017 Yalukut performers, Gawurra and Yirrmal, and is paving the way for Indigenous rappers – being the first Aboriginal artist to rap in an Indigenous language on his debut single Cloud 9, released earlier this year. The Festival will also feature free activities and workshops for all ages including boomerang burning, basket weaving, Indigenous Hip Hop Projects workshops and performances, arts & crafts and more. There will also be a traditional smoking ceremony hosted by the Boon Wurrung Foundation for all to take part in.
