Community invited to help shape the first Strategic Management Plan for the Coal Loader. From its Aboriginal cultural significance and industrial heritage to its sustainability programs, community events and harbour views, the Coal Loader is one of North Sydney’s most unique and much-loved public places. North Sydney Council is developing the first Coal Loader Strategic Management Plan and is inviting residents, workers, students, business owners and visitors to share what they value about the site and their ideas for its future. Located on Cammeraygal Country at Waverton Peninsula, the heritage-listed 2.8-hectare site has deep ongoing cultural significance. From the 1920s to the early 1990s it functioned as a working coal transfer depot. Today, it is a place where people can explore, learn, connect and enjoy the natural environment. The Strategic Management Plan will establish a clear vision and guide how the Coal Loader is experienced, activated and cared for in the years ahead. It will help inform future service delivery, partnerships, capital works, asset management and climate resilience across the site.  

Council wants to hear what people value most about the Coal Loader, what may affect their enjoyment of the site and how it could be improved. Feedback will help Council consider opportunities to strengthen Aboriginal cultural values and caring for Country, recognise the site’s industrial history, improve access and inclusion, grow environmental education and sustainability programs and care for the site’s buildings, public spaces and natural environment. The community can complete the online survey or use the interactive map to show what they value about the Coal Loader and where improvements could be made. Feedback closes on Tuesday 8 December 2026.
