Buzz Lightyear took us to infinity and beyond at HOYTS and the national box office this weekend where Toy Story 5 blasted into first place bringing in $9.76M – making it the biggest Toy Storyfranchise opening weekend ever and the third highest Pixar opening of all time. Holding onto second place this weekend was Obsession where it earned $2.06M and brings its cumulative total to $18.77M. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day landed at number three with $1.79M, bringing its box office total to $6.78M, while the Wayans brothers are still thrilling audiences with Scary Movie – which generated another $791k this weekend and brings the comedy-horror’s total to $7.86M. Rounding out the top five was another frightening flick, Backrooms which took in $779k, making this release the seventh biggest horror film of all time in Australia.
- HOYTS ended the weekend in the number one spot for the 18th week in a row.
- The top 10 movies together contributed to 91.45% of the total national gross box office for the weekend.
- HOYTS had five sites in the top 10 this week: Chadstone #2, Carousel #3, Melbourne Central #6, Highpoint #7 and Karrinyup #8.
- Animation was the top genre this weekend with Toy Story 5 releasing. This was the biggest opening weekend for a family/animated movie year to date.
