An original comedy musical about two teenage girls attending a debutante ball in a small rural town.
Apparently The Deb is a musical by Hannah Reilly with music by Megan Washington and lyrics by Washington & Reilly and premiered April 8th 2022 at The Rebel Theatre in Sydney.
If you get the chance to be sure to go and see The Deb this weekend. Going into this I’m willing to admit that you’re right I’m not the target demographic for this movie considering I’m over the age of 40. Also going into this I’ll suggest that you temporarily set aside any Ill will that you might have for Rebel Wilson and ignore the legal disputes surrounding The Deb. Is it a good idea to mention the legal disputes in a movie review? Probably not, but after five minutes of googling this movie they could find information about it, First thing first. Rebel, in your directorial debut THANK YOU for not giving us another performance that could be ridiculed as Toula from Fat Pizza. Initially I watched this hoping that The Deb had a similar sense of humour to Natalie Bailey’s 2024 movie Audrey, so awkward I wasn’t sure if I should be laughing out loud. It doesn’t. However, The Deb’s first song Fuck My Life had me thinking that perhaps it was going to. I still hope that The Deb gains recognition from The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA Awards). I will admit that The Deb is a little cliched and has a slight resemblance to Nick Moore’s 2008 movie Wild Child. However, if we are being realistic almost every single Teen movie that has ever been made is cliched. So any passing resemblance to any other movie can be over looked so long as it’s not a blatant rip off. Which I’d like to think that The Deb isn’t. It should be noted that by the first song featuring Taylah and Maeve you understood the direction that the movie was going. I enjoyed the performances of Natalie Abbott and Charlotte MacInnes they were great opposite each other as Taylah and Maeve. Shane Jacobson is the kind of actor that you would expect in every Australian movie production. I loved the movie’s final number and the credits sequence.
