Auto racer Alex Furlong is snatched by time travel, a split second before a fatal explosion, by Vasendak’s twenty-first century team of techies, who plan to sell his healthy body to an ailing rich man at McCandless Corporation, for a mind transfer. He escapes, but has no rights in this nightmare future of violence and sleaze.
Freejack has been sitting in the pile of movies that I have been meaning to watch for longer than I care to admit. For those of you who might be interested, Freejack was loosely based on the 1959 science fiction novel “Immortality, Inc.” by Robert Sheckley. Apparently in an interview on the Late Show with David Letterman, Anthony Hopkins called Freejack “a terrible film”. Personally I don’t think that Freejack is “a terrible film” but it is far from ever considered a masterpiece, at best Freejack is watchable. Sitting here writing this I loved the premise of Freejack and I will admit that I found myself being reminded of (at least partly) the 2015 movie Self/less. Emilio Estevez gave the kind of promotion that you would expect from him while I enjoyed Mick Jagger’s performance. The fun thing about watching Freejack is watching it in 2025 and taking the time to wonder what happened in the 18 years between 1991 and 2009 to cause the dystopian future portrayed in the movie. In the third act of the movie there are a few effect shots that look a bit off, whether or not this should be blamed on the film’s budget or the technology of the time is entirely open to interpretation. Given the culture of remakes it wouldn’t surprise me if Freejack ever got remade.
