Archie Williams is a 17-year old media geek who has suddenly found himself the most talked-about kid in school. He has announced that he’s going to kill himself- on camera- for a class project.

His classmates, parents, Sierra- the most beautiful girl in school, and a “Shady Bunch” of shrinks, doctors, pill-pushers, and counselors descend on Archie. Some are hoping to save him, some want to imitate him, others try to push him over the brink. Archie films every moment of his high school experience, hiding nothing from his audience:

Sitting here writing this I was vaguely reminded of a movie from back in 2016 directed by Thea Sharrock ‘Me Before You’ and how problematic it is with the question of suicide. Now i’m not entirely sure if a re-review of Me Before You is in order but My Suicide might not be as problematic as Me Before You was at the time but it certainly more confronting especially considering it took me three attempts to get all the way through it certainly is more confronting. It wouldn’t surprise me to see something similar to this done in the style of a mockumentary. For those of you who go looking for this keep in mind that it is known as My Suicide or Archie’s Final Project and you’ll probably have to look for it on Ebay or Amazon.

This is the only time that I’ve come across the work of director David Lee Miller and either of the leads Gabriel Sunday and Brooke Nevin. Both Sunday and Nevin had some great together as Archie and Sierra. I also enjoyed the dynamic between Archie and Dr. Chandrasakar (portrayed by Joe Mantegna). I found that some of the cutaways used throughout the movie reminded me of the 2000 Canadian teen comedy-drama television series Our Hero starring Cara Pifko. I loved David Caradine’s performance as Vargas, what he has to say about suicide is brilliant. “If you want to kill yourself man, kill what you don’t like. Kill Narcissus. I had an old self that I killed. You can kill yourself too but that doesn’t mean you got to stop living. Kill the part that’s all about you and nobody else because that’s the part that makes you want to curl up and die.”
