Rialto Distribution has announced extraordinary US box office results for DAVID, the animated musical epic from Angel Studios, ahead of its Australian theatrical release on January 15. Opening in 3,118 cinemas across North America, DAVID debuted to a remarkable US$22 million opening weekend, securing the No.2 position at the domestic box office and setting a new opening weekend record for Angel Studios. The result surpasses the studio’s previous high-water mark set by Sound of Freedom (US$19.6 million) and marks the largest opening ever for an independently released animated epic.
The film also delivered an impressive per-screen average of US$7,056, demonstrating strong demand well beyond niche audiences. While critics delivered solid reviews (70% on Rotten Tomatoes), audience response has been exceptional, with a 98% audience score and an “A” CinemaScore, underscoring the film’s broad family appeal. DAVID reimagines the legendary biblical story through epic animation and original music, blending large-scale spectacle with universal themes of courage, destiny, and resilience.

“The US opening of DAVID is an extraordinary result by any measure. This is not a niche outcome, but a major box office event driven by families and audiences looking for ambitious, values-led storytelling on the big screen. The scale of this debut proves that films like DAVID resonate far beyond any one demographic, and we’re excited to be bringing this cinematic experience to Australian audiences in January.” Kelly Rogers, CEO of Rialto Distribution commented.
Angel Studios reported particularly strong attendance from families and multigenerational audiences, positioning DAVID for a sustained theatrical run through the holiday period in the US. With its record-breaking debut, powerful word-of-mouth, and universal storytelling, DAVID arrives in Australian cinemas on January 15 as one of the most successful independent animated releases of recent years.
