ACT Libraries: A Look at 2017

The most popular books and DVDs requested from ACT public libraries in 2017 were revealed today by Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris.
“Around 2.74 million items are borrowed each year from ACT public libraries by Canberrans, demonstrating the continued relevance of our local libraries to our communities. Our libraries play an integral role in the everyday lives of Canberrans whether it be for education or entertainment,” Minister Fitzharris commented “Library members have demonstrated a growing interest in non-fiction titles for a second year running, with self-help books and memoirs comprising four of the top five requested books.”

The most requested books (fiction and non-fiction) in 2017 were:
1. The Barefoot Investor: The only money guide you’ll ever need by Scott Pape
2. Light and Shadow: Memoirs of a spy’s son by Mark Colvin
3. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F- – -: A counterintuitive approach to living a good life by Mark Manson
4. Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a family and culture in crisis by J. D. Vance
5. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

The most requested DVDs in 2017 were:
1. The Girl on the Train
2. Game of Thrones: the Complete Sixth Series
3. Sully
4. The Light Between Oceans
5. The Accountant

“Game of Thrones continues to keep its fans captivated with various seasons having appeared in the Top 5 consistently since 2013. I enjoy seeing these lists compiled each year as it not only demonstrates the variety in both what our public libraries offer and in our individual interests, and it also gives me ideas for what to pop on my bedside table over the coming year.” Minister Fitzharris commented.
The Minister said that with another year upon us, there are many new and recent releases, and soon to be released books that are bound to make it difficult to turn out the light in 2018. I encourage all Canberrans to visit their local library and discover the many resources on offer. Members can access music downloads, eBooks, digital magazines and newspapers, encyclopaedias and much more.
