Seniors Week in Western Australia

Western Australia’s biggest celebration of seniors gets underway today and runs until November 5, with a week of activities to excite and inform older Western Australians – and active ageing is top of the agenda. More than $79,000 has been provided to 86 organisations through the State Government’s Seniors Week Community Grants program, for events throughout the State.
“Seniors Week is a great initiative and an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution seniors make to our communities. The McGowan Government is proud to support Seniors Week in WA through the Seniors Week Community Grants program.” Western Australian Minister for Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; Sport and Recreation Mick Murray commented.
The Minister explained that among the events are two free screenings in Augusta and Margaret River of films from the recent Life in Pictures short film competition. The competition was a creative collaboration between the Department of Communities, Revelation Perth International Film Festival and Screenwest to challenge negative attitudes and stereotypes about ageing. In Yokine, JewishCare WA is hosting a music concert, while in Pinjarra the Shire of Murray is hosting a country and western themed evening for seniors. The Minister went on to add that a highlight of Seniors Week is the annual Have a Go Day at Burswood Park on Wednesday, November 1, with about 15,000 people expected to attend. Have a Go Day – celebrating its 25th year at Burswood Park – is an opportunity for seniors to try a range of activities and source seniors-specific services and information, while challenging some of the negative stereotypes about ageing.
“There are some fantastic activities planned for the week and I encourage young and old alike to get out and enjoy them. I also encourage seniors to visit the WA Seniors Card stand at Have a Go Day to find out how they can apply and join in with some of the exciting activities.” Minister Murray commented.
