Perth International Queer Film Festival 2016

The WA AIDS Council in collaboration with The Backlot Perth are thrilled to host the inaugural Perth International Queer Film Festival from September 9-15. With support from The Film Collaborative and M-Appeal, seven films showcasing the very best of International Queer Cinema will premiere in Western Australia across seven nights at the boutique venue with proceeds to the WA AIDS Council.
Film Festival Director Mark Reid said that he was on a mission to offer Perth audiences thought provoking film. “I didn’t want to put films in the festival that were happy ever after films…It needed to be gritty, it needed to show the depth of filmmaking that’s still happening out there.” Reid explains in a recent interview with the Guardian Express. ‘The inclusion of Like Cattle Towards Glow’, a piece by controversial author Dennis Cooper is testament to this” Reid commented.
Reid went on to explain that the festival program includes films from across the globe including the USA, South Africa, The Netherlands and Germany with several premiering in Australia for the first time, including opening night film ‘Jonathan’. Follow the journey of Jonathan, a 23 year old who sacrifices himself by taking care of his cancer-stricken father and works on the family farm. A long buried family secret puts the father-son relationship to the test. ‘Portrait of a Serial Monogamist’ described as ‘High Fidelity for lesbians’, a smart and authentic Canadian comedy set to a fabulous soundtrack, and ‘Daddy’ both screened over east at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. Now Perth audiences can enjoy these films on the big screen.
