Upgrade announced for Canberra Theatre Centre

Minister for the Arts Joy Burch has announced that the Government will invest $4.109 million over the next three years in upgrading the Canberra Theatre Centre.
“This major capital project will support the Centre in its role as the region’s premier performing arts venue,” Ms Burch said. “Every year around 200,000 people attend performances and events at the Centre. This funding will ensure those patrons continue to enjoy a high quality theatre experience.”
Ms Burch noted that the Government recognises the need for continuing investment in the Canberra Theatre Centre to ensure that the Canberra community and visitors to our region can access a wide range of high quality theatre productions. We also acknowledge the important role that the venue plays in the life of the city centre, by bringing hundreds of thousands of people into the city, who then patronise city centre restaurants, cafes and shops.
Ms Burch pointed out that, as the Centre marked its 50th birthday in 2015, it was important to enhance the Centre’s existing facilities and also look to the future. Ms Burch went on to explain that the new project continues a staged program of major improvements to the Centre. Major items in the package include: new seating and carpet for the Canberra Theatre; new carpet for The Playhouse; upgrade the main foyer bar area; refurbish Green Room facilities, dressing rooms, backstage and Stage Door areas; renovate the Canberra Theatre stage; and works to improve security, electrical and fire safety, heating and air-conditioning.
“I’m pleased that in the Centre’s Golden Anniversary year we’re progressing studies to explore possible further upgrades to the centre in the future. The funding I’ve announced, together with the new studies, show the Government recognises the importance of the arts in the life of our community, as well as their role in making our city an exciting place to live and an attractive destination for business and tourism.” Ms Burch commented.
