The hot-headed young D’Artagnan along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.

Just like the other cinematic interpretations of Alexander Dumas’ epic novel The Three Muskeeters, Paul W. S. Anderson’s interpretation is just as epic as the rest of the movies however unlike the other movies it has a very distinct ‘comic book’ movie feel to it. This approach gave the director a far more grander scale to work with which was in keeping with epic scale of the tale.
Christoph Waltz gave a brilliant performance as the Cardinal Richelieu though personally I feel that Tim Rice’s performance as Richelieu in director Stephen Herek’s 1993 interpretation of the tale. In comparing the two movies, I also believe that Kiefer Sutherland’s performance as Athos was darker and considerably more broody compared with Matthew Macfadyen’s performance.

The Three Musketeers movies will never be considered as cinematic masterpieces and I doubt that they have ever attempted to sell themselves as anything but as good piece of fun or ‘popcorn’ movies that you enjoy with your friends. And all we are left wondering is will there be a sequel?
